Diving in Naxos !

Discover the impressive wrecks !

Are you a certified diver and you are in Naxos? Go dive on the wreckage of Marianna and / or that of the plane. It is rare to have the opportunity to dive on two different wrecks in the same place. It would be a shame to miss this opportunity. Visibility on all sites is excellent. In the space of a month and a half, visibility has rarely gone below 20 meters. Pretty incredible. Some dives are exposed to the current, but this one is rarely very violent.

It is also a perfect destination to spend your first dive. The water is clear and the conditions are excellent to make its first bubbles under water.

Naxos is also popular for divers visiting the Cyclades: wrecks.

The Marianna, a cargo ship

In 1981, the Marianna was intentionally sunk by its Greek owners who wanted to receive the benefits of their insurance. To sink the freighter as discreetly as possible, its owners made it run aground on reefs, between Naxos and Paros. Except that these reefs are only a few meters from a lighthouse: the wreck quickly hindered navigation around. The Greek authorities have therefore decided to blast the wreck. Today, the Marianna is separated into two parts. It rests 25 meters deep, but the top of its chimney still pierces the surface. We dive on both parts of the wreck and on the surrounding reef. Even if you feel like you are "in the middle" of the stretch of water that separates Naxos from Paros, the site is only 10 minutes away from Agios Prokopios. Once under water, you go down to the bottom of the wreck, 25 meters away, and the dive simply consists of going up gradually around the wreck.

A plane wreck of the 2nd World War

It is for us the most beautiful dive that can be done from Naxos. Reserved for advanced divers from its depth (33 meters), this aircraft wreck is in a remarkable state of preservation. The cockpit is almost intact!

The plane is a Bristol Type 156 Beaufighter piloted during the Second World War by the British. Shot down in 1943 by German forces, her wreckage was discovered in 2007. The story goes that the pilots of the plane survived, and were recovered by Naxos residents who had witnessed the air combat.

At this depth, you can not stay long, ten minutes at most. Enough still to be able to have a good overview of the wreck, which measures 13 meters by 18 approximately.

Quality dive schools are available in Naxos, their customers comes from all over the world. You will be able to rent equipment or attend classes and discover the seabed of Naxos safely.
